the napa river, flood stage, 16 feet. it will go over about a foot over flood stage tonight, tomorrow morning, same holds true for the napa river. over flood stage for a temporary amount of time and then recede quickly tomorrow. we'll check out the rainfall totals and the forecast coming up. >> ama: a warning in the south bay. the creek is about to overflow its banks. we're live in men menlo park. >> this is the bridge and crews just arrive. they brought sandbags and are placing them here along the street. they've also blocked off this entire area. they're trying to keep the curious public away from the rising waters of the creek. where we are, the creek divides palo alto and menlo park, and the last time it overran its banks was back in 1998, and they think it's going to flood again tonight. within the past hour or so men lo park firefighters have been driving through neighborhoods, warning residents about the rising creek. the san mateo county security alert system is calling people. there are homes that run along -- right along the creek, and those residents are feeling a

there and a sinkhole that opened up earlier today. >> reporter: that is right, sewn ♪ [ music ] marin, napa all counties battered hard by the wind and the rain. and we're looking at one of the after-effects a sinkhole that closed a road here. road crews spent several hours getting stoney point road patched, where it intersected madron road. they just don't trust stoney point from collapsing completely. already the 4' culvert under the roll has failed on both sides and water has erode the soil around and under, it creating the sinkhole about 10' deep. the culvert was already failing due to age and the heavy run- off just finished it off. >> with the last three days, you know, this much rain short amount of time, it just causes a lot of havoc. we have a lot of roads closed right now due to flooding and it's just too much water in a short amount of time. >> reporter: and this is stoney point road, just south of here, in petaluma, there has been a flash flood warning in effect for most of the day and for good reason. you can see the streets and fields are overwhelmed. this mobile-home park had a f

there in the meantime, the creek continues to go down. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >>> the napa river has crested below flood stage and is receding this morning after a flood warning was issued yesterday. that prompted the closure of the downtown riverfront promenade as a precaution. locals were confident the river would not flood and they were right. today it is predicted to crest again at 16 1/2 feet, 16 inches below flood stage. >>> in santa cruz county the water rose so fast, 40 families of felton grove had to leave their homes the san lorenzo river reached four feet over flood stage yesterday, a tree fell on power lines knocking out electricity to nearby communities. getting in and out was a challenge after heavy rains forced closure of southbound highway 9. >>> in the north bay they are still dealing with aftermath of flooding and high winds. giant fir tree split the roof of a house in forestville yesterday. power lines were damaged, nobody was hurt. lucky no one was inside the club pleasanton when a big redwood crashed through the roof, crews cut branches and cleared out debris. >>> portion of s

for napa, hayward, oakland, san francisco today and downtown, only at 48 degrees. sonoma, you only hit 46. one of the cooler christmases we've had in a while. the reason we have the cool front pushing through, breezy, notice all the yellow and red. the heaviest return now pushing off to the east and moving from the bay area towards the sierra where heavy snow will fall. wet, breedsy at times overnight tonight for the first half of tomorrow. then that front is gone. for one day, again, only one day, we'll dry out with high pressure building in thursday, looks mainly dry before another rain maker moves in for friday and saturday. just some showers out there over the weekend. but saturday looks to be the wetter day of our two-day weekend. soaking rainfall possible through tonight. slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm. we saw reports of small hail in south santa clara county. rainfall ending by tomorrow afternoon and we get that break before the rain moves back. highs too many, mid-50s. lots of you heading back to the mall to return the gifts you got today. look the at highs in the low 5

francisco and 36 in san jose. compared too yet at this time, we are 9 degrees cooler in napa and 7 degrees cooler in santa rosa and livermore. so just keep that in mind. temperatures will still be on the cool side. it's clear and cool in the mornings, but for new year's eve looking dry. we have a bright start to new year's day with plenty of sunshine for the beginning of 2013. we will show you the radar. it basically shows this area of low pressure has slid south. that's giving southern california a chance of rain. but we have high pressure building, sunnier skies, although temperatures on the cool side with the cooler air mass over us. so we are only going to warm up into the low 50s for the most part. 51 san francisco, 50 fairfield and antioch, 52 san jose. so just a few degrees cooler than what you would expect for this time of year. morgan hill 52, as well. 51 in watsonville. temperatures fairly uniform around the bay area. now, if you are heading up to tahoe, there is a winter weather advisory. it's actually on the nevada side so not quite on the california side. one to three inches o

in napa. so yes, a bit nippy. patchy frost out there this morning. a little bit of fog as well. seeing fog just inside the bay. i want to back you up and show you the next system here. this is what will with approaching the coast as we get into new years eve. it will split apart. the northern edge will take a northerly trek. the part that comes our way will be sliding south right along the coastline. it will cloud us up. it will be a weak system and moisture starved at that. i think we will see a little bit of drizzle. i will show you here. sunday will be quiet and dry. it will be mostly sunny and cool once again. as we get into the new years eve we will see the best chance for a little bit of drizzle a light little sprinkle but it will move through. for your new years eve night festivities will go as planned and mainly dry. we are looking at just a few clouds overhead in time for midnight and we are looking at some nice weather, chilly weather, but nice dry weather for the fire works going on at the embarcadero in san francisco. if you will see the niners play for today 52 degrees partly
